Petition Calling for Pause of EWR Project and an Independent Review

Pause Plans for Oxford-Cambridge Rail Link Pending a Full, Independent Review

We have launched a new petition alongside Cambridge Approaches asking government to “Pause plans for Oxford-Cambridge rail link pending a full, independent review” of the East West Rail project.

The petition will close on 11 June 2025.

We aim to reach 10,000 signatures.

The petition states “We do not want the Bedford to Cambridge section of the Oxford to Cambridge Rail Link as described by East West Rail Co’s Route Update Announcement and subsequent refinements including in the 2024 Non Statutory Consultation. We call for plans to be paused for a full transparent and independent review.”

The EWR Proposal is NOT fit for purpose

  • Fails to adequately define how an acceptable level of economic growth will be achieved for Bedford
  • Has no credible business case to justify a budget figure of 5B+ of taxpayer funds (2021 budget figure does not take into account complete Route E construction requirements nor increased costs of materials)
  • Fails to provide transparent analysis of environmental impacts for the railway construction and operation including the quantum of embodied  carbon
  • Fails to define multi-modal transport plans for local communities to access EWR stations from their catchment areas
  • FAILS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE UNIVERSAL PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
